A Mortal Hymn

she’s a haunted girl
but haunted in a way that makes her feel at home
walks a trodden path, worn with care and age
she’s got a ghost beside her – spirit of the world
she’s got the ghost around her like the shell surrounds a pearl

the vaunted walls are vaunted in a way that makes her feel at home
walks the dusty aisle along the lighted way
she’s got a ghost beside her – spirit of the world
she’s got the ghost within her, shining through the girl

she sings to heaven with the seraphim
puts her faith in love and gives it all to him
what are you searching for?
she says she knows there’s something more
raise your eyes above the rim

the gilded door familiar in a way that makes him feel at home
walks a different path but the flagstones are the same
he’s got a way about him – a discipline of mind
his way is foreign to her but similar in kind

a dirt packed floor
toiled there for an age she knows this as her home
never shown a path, she walks one just the same
never had the guidance – manages what she can
never searched for faith, but by morals she will stand

she wants to show him the way…
a discerning mind will recognise it’s really not the same
he needs to follow his own path
the choice is his alone to make if he’s to join in her refrain

she sings to heaven with the seraphim
puts her faith in love and gives it all to him
what are you searching for?
she says she knows there’s something more
raise your eyes above the rim

it’s just a mortal hymn
